Lay Ministers and Funeral Leaders

Lay Ministers and Funeral Leaders

Lay Ministers, including Funeral Leaders, are trained members of the Catholic Church who support the pastoral and liturgical life of the parish, especially in times of need. Funeral Leaders play a vital role by leading funeral prayers and services—such as vigils and graveside riteswhen a priest or deacon is unavailable, offering comfort, dignity, and hope rooted in Christian faith. Their ministry ensures that the bereaved are spiritually supported, the Church’s rites are respected, and the deceased are honoured with prayer, compassion, and reverence. Through their service, Lay Ministers extend the Church’s pastoral care to the community in moments of loss and grief.
